NEW BUMPER IMPACT STRIPS PAINTED BODY COLOR
The
task here was a "updating project". I purchased new bumper impact
strips from www.thepartsbin.com
and also had www.towerpaint.com
mix up two cans of lower body color paint for me. The prep work here
was the same as the advant garde grill. After the paint had dried 24
hours, I removed the front bumper and then removed the impact strip.
The bumper is held on by four bolts that you have to access from inside of
each fender well. Its best if you have a friend help you since the
bumpers are not that light and you don't want to damage it.

The
impact strips have tabs on the back of the bumper and by bending in the
tabs the impact strip can be removed. There were also some small
covers on the drivers side of the bumper
near the bottom, I removed these covers from the bumper to help promote
cooling to the brakes, the passenger side did not have these covers for
some reason.
The new painted impact strips snap right onto the
bumper, with no problems. Since the factory paint on the Mercedes is
a two step paint (base plus clear coat) and is a poly urethane based
paint, I expected the aerosol paint to be a bit off on the color hue (you
can only have enamel one step paint pressurized in a aerosol
can)
and just like I thought, the color was not a perfect match, its not that
noticeable and actually looks fairly good, giving the bumper a bit of
contrast (but of course not as ugly or outdated looking as a flat black
that was originally on the bumper). Since
there was no option on the 190 to get the impact strip with no license
plate indentation (you can get a filler piece for the 300E) I decided to
go ahead and order the factory front license plate holder and run with a
front plate (it looks better than no front plate in this situation!).
The rear bumper removal was also rather
simple, there are 6 bolts accessible from the inside of the trunk.
The impact strip here is also removed using the same
process as mentioned above. Just painting the impacts strip body
color updates the exterior styling
so much. I also did this on my 1989 Mercedes 300E (on the 1989 300E,
the bumpers were gray, I painted the entire bumper and the impact strip
body color, made for much more
of a improvement than on the 190E, since the 190's bumper was already
painted)
