EXHAUST
My OE
exhaust was pretty much rusted through, so I needed to do something.
Not wanting to drop $600 on a Remus rear muffler, I found a OBX full
stainless steel muffler on Ebay, I ended up picking it up for $83 shipped.
I like the look of the tips and the full stainless steel design guarantees
its not going to rust out anytime soon
I have
never liked the look of silver mufflers, when a muffler is painted black,
it kind of disappears, leaving only the nice shiny tips for the people
behind you to see. Remus & AMG mufflers are like this, so I decided
to paint mine. First thing to do was to mask off the tips and sand
the entire body of the muffler with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper.

To
paint a muffler, you really have to use a high temp paint. I used a
1200 degree engine enamel paint. I had to insert a long bolt into my
painting table to get the muffler to stand up like this. I wanted to
make sure the entire surface received a nice non-runny coat of paint.
Actually, about 6 coats of paint.
This is a straight
on picture of the OBX muffler after painting.
Another side angle

A rear
picture of the OBX muffler installed. I had to notch the rear bumper
to get the exhaust to tuck up. I wanted to make sure there was
enough room around the tips, as I have seen bumpers melt from the heat of
the tips. I also tried to radius the corners a bit. A dremel
comes in handy for this.
A rear
picture of the 190 with the exhaust installed. I know it is not
exactly centered, but it was when it was welded in place, guess I will
have to fix it. I had a Y pipe made to connect to the cat and then
into a new 2.5" pipe all the way back to the muffler. The center
resonator was removed. The car sounds very throaty now, at highway
speeds in 4th gear, the car is very quiet.
This picture shows
you the new exhaust and piping that was built. I painted the all the
new pipe black to match the exhaust body, not that anyone is going to see
it though.
